Obesity Rates on the Rise

November 30, 2017

Despite continued efforts to improve child health and nutrition, an article published in Pediatrics looked at data from 1999-2016 and found that we still have work to do. Researchers wanted to update our understanding of childhood obesity rates among children aged 2-19 across the U.S. The results not only show that obesity rates are still on the rise, but also that racial identification is a significant predictor of obesity. While obesity rates are increasing for all children, this research showed a sharp increase in preschool-aged children and that White and Asian American children have significantly lower rates of obesity than African American and Hispanic children or children of other races.
