Removing Competitive Foods v. Nudging and Marketing School Meals: A Pilot Study in High School Cafeterias

December 3, 2019

This study compared the number of reimbursable meals served at schools that either removed competitive foods or used marketing strategies to promote their own food program. In their results, the authors found that schools where a) competitive foods were removed or b) where the food program was promoted over competitive foods saw significantly higher average daily participation (ADP). Schools that removed competitive foods also saw a 6% increase in vegetable servings. These findings point to two viable strategies for increasing ADP.
