Project Description

Rainbow Day, Garden Day, and Tasting Booth Encourage Kids to Eat a Rainbow

Chappelow K-8 School executed three different events to demonstrate to their students that eating fruits and vegetables is easy, fun, and delicious.

On Rainbow Day, staff set up a booth in the school cafeteria during lunch periods. The booth featured two varieties of fruit salad: One was a more traditional salad, that comprised strawberries, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries, and purple grapes. The other fruit salad featured some more exotic fruits that most of the students had never seen before, including star fruit.

Both salads incorporated all of the colors of the rainbow: Staff used the colors to promote the idea of eating a variety of fruits to get the proper daily recommendation of vitamins. Students also received a coloring page with nutrition facts about how each color helps keep their bodies healthy. The fruit salad recipes were printed for students to take home.

In addition to the Rainbow Day activities, Chappelow K-8 also planned a Garden Day to teach students about growing their own fruits and vegetables at home. Students sampled raw produce, including carrots, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries, and bell peppers, which were chosen because they are easy to grow at home in containers.

Volunteers distributed educational materials about growing a garden at home, and recipes showing different ways to use their vegetables. The third event was a tasting booth at the school’s Field Day that included fruit and vegetable samples plus information about how kids can better fuel their physical activity.

Successes

  • Chappelow staff were able to negotiate great deals on local fruits and vegetables. This allowed funding to be allocated towards a third event for the program.
