How to Maximize School Meals for All

With 9 states now participating in School Meals for All, many school food operators have the ability to increase their program’s reach and capacity. This rare opportunity can support both the fiscal health of a school food program, as well as the community need for healthy meals for all.

Alongside many benefits, School Meals for All provides access to nutritious foods for more students. School food is often much healthier than food packed from home or purchased off campus during the school day. By serving more school meals, we can offer healthier foods to all students.

Finances

We all know: budgets drive everything. School Meals for All can generate more revenue for your food service program, due to both the free reimbursement rate and an opportunity to gain new customers. Since the state pays for the meals (instead of students paying), many school food programs should be able to avoid lunch balance debt this year. The more meals you can serve, the more reimbursement your program will receive.

Additionally, since there are no financial obligations for students, School Meals for All can eliminate the stigma tied to eating meals at school. Every student can eat a school meal without worrying about family finances, debt, or possible “lunch shaming.” This is a huge step forward in creating a more equitable program.

Marketing

It’s crucial to create an awareness campaign that your state is participating in School Meals for All where school meals will be accessible to all students permanently.

Make sure your whole district knows that you are providing free meals, including administration, principals, teachers, and of course students. You can tackle this with a variety of platforms and messages, to make sure you’re reaching a large audience multiple times through the year.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Work with your district’s communications department if available to you.
  • Place School Meals for All language front and center on the district’s website, and make sure it communicates that all meals are permanently free in your state.
  • Send a back-to-school newsletter or email blast to parents about School Meals for All, to encourage their children to participate in the school food program. Include links to your menu and pictures of appealing menu items.
  • Promote appealing menu items and pictures on your social media channels. Let your audience know that healthy school meals are accessible all year.
  • Connect with partners, including small and local businesses, to expand awareness around School Meals for All as well as your program’s overall serving efforts.
  • Consider using posters and signs to encourage participation.

Accessibility

If your state is participating in School Meals for All, try to find ways to increase the number of meals served. Explore situations where you are able to bring food directly to the students to make it more convenient for them.

By making meals more accessible, students are more likely to participate in your meal program. Can you set up a Grab and Go breakfast closer to the bus drop off point? Could you create a Breakfast After the Bell program or serve Breakfast in the Classroom to increase breakfast sales and fuel your students up for a successful day at school?

If your district ever has an unforeseeable closure for an extended period of time due to an emergency situation, consider Home Delivery Meals if it is safe to do so. You may be able to partner with your transportation department for distribution.

You can also continue to offer Curbside Meals or Meal Kits to cover long breaks and holidays, which is a great way to exponentially increase your meal count. Visit our section on Bulk Meal Kits and start planning for these times in advance - many bulk meal kits can start preparation well before break, to spread the lift over several weeks.
