Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation: Summer Nutrition Status Report

June 2018

This report measures the reach of the Summer Nutrition Programs in July 2017, nationally and in each state. It is based on a variety of metrics and examines the impact of trends and policies on program participation.

Currently, the Summer Nutrition Programs are only serving one child for every seven low-income children who participate in school lunch during the regular school year. The study concludes that an increase in federal, state, and local funding as well as private funding can help increase access to the Summer Nutrition Programs. FRAC calls on Congress to improve community eligibility and urges the USDA to support participation with promotion, outreach and planning.
